Marianna Nigra aka Glance 02 explores the role of emotions and experiences as factors that shape personality, thinking pattern, and physical appearance of people. Her aim as an artist is to shed light on specific moments, details and looks that allow seeing beyond façades, and searching for truth. The work titled ‘This is Somebody…’ comprises of nine photos exhibited in conjunction with short descriptions, referring to the personal stories of the people featured in the photos. The artist does not explicitly say which description matches which portrait, in such way to force the audience to first read, then observe, and finally empathize with the images showed, in order to understand who could be the subject of each image.
This work is aimed at encouraging the ability of overcoming pre-defined frames of mind and learns to pause, observe, empathize and connect, and eventually discovering our ability of going beyond prejudices, or at least understanding how often we fall into their traps.
The work is exhibited until the 3rd July 2014 as part of the show ‘Portrayal’, displayed now at the Brunswick Street Gallery, Fitzroy, VIC, Australia.
